It is makes good economic sense to adopt an earth friendly lifestyle these days. Hoards of consumers are environmentally conscious when it comes to the choices they make each day. Decisions that are made with regard to eating have a large impact the environment in addition to health. These are a few ideas for eating green at home and when dining away from home.
Eat Less Meat
Making the decision to eat less meat is one way to commit to eating green. The current production of meat alone contributes up to 22% of the 36 billion tons of carbon dioxide equivalent gases produced each year. It is said that making a half pound cheeseburger releases greenhouse gas equivalent to driving a car for ten miles. Organic beef is a better choice if meat is included in a diet.
Patronize environmentally conscious restaurants when dining away from home that offer a wide variety of green food choices on their menus. Knowing ahead of time what the better choices are will make the meal more enjoyable. For instance, beans are easier to digest if soaked overnight. Ask what type of cooking oil is used to prepare the food. Coconut oil and olive oil are better choices than vegetable oil in food preparation.
Eating Pure Green Food
Eating uncooked, unprocessed food is not only healthy, but a good way to remain eco friendly. Left in their natural state, organic fruits and vegetables eliminate the need to use energy in order to cook them. Their nutritional value is an added bonus and can improve overall health. Carrots, avocado and kiwi are a few of the easiest to prepare fruits and vegetables.
Recycling and Cleaning
Eating green also means being conscious of how the kitchen is cleaned, the utensils that are used and how food related waste is disposed of. Purchase green food that comes in recyclable packaging to reduce waste. When recycling, sort plastic container numbers two and three, found on the bottom of the container and recycle the remaining trash. Another good idea is to buy a water filter for the kitchen faucet and use glass or recycled plastic sports bottles. Cloth napkins and recycled or post consumer waste paper products are more eco friendly. Use natural cleaners around the home such as lemon juice, club soda and white vinegar. Another useful tip to conserve energy and water is to only run the dishwasher when it is full.
Perhaps the best way to ensure that produce is chemical free is to start an eco friendly garden. Buy organic seed and soil a plant a small vegetable garden. Easy to grow and store vegetables include tomatoes, carrots, onion and cauliflower. Even apartment dwellers can grow produce like tomatoes from containers and herbs from window gardens.
