The United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) has recognized Dubai as the leading city in the world for its resilience, and a role model for being a smart and sustainable city.
His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Executive Council commended the government entities whose efforts have helped the emirate gain the recognition.
“Dubai’s risk and disaster management teams work to constantly raise their preparedness to deal with unforeseen crises and develop long-term strategies to promote a culture of readiness to manage all kinds of risks,” the Dubai Media Office said in a statement.
Dubai was the only city recognised for its efforts of adopting best practices and innovative systems in disaster risk reduction. It emerged as first among 56 cities that were shortlisted out of 4,357 competing cities.
The recognition comes following an assessment based on the ’10 Essentials for Making Cities Resilience’ which included 117 criteria.
During a meeting at the Dubai World Trade Centre, HH Sheikh Hamdan urged the government teams to continue their efforts in raising Dubai’s profile in global sustainability rankings and support innovative ideas to help Dubai transform challenges into opportunities.
