Our mission is to empower young people to become environmentally conscious leaders through action-driven programs that equip them to tackle these global issues in their schools, communities, and families. Youth Action Pillars

Empowering Ocean Stewards: Tackling Plastic Pollution Through Citizen Science

In November 2024, Goumbook launched Empowering Ocean Stewards, a youth-driven project focused on tackling plastic pollution in the UAE. Using the globally recognized COLLECT methodology, this pilot project engages students as citizen scientists to collect and analyze coastal plastic debris along beaches in Sharjah.

Led by Goumbook, the initial project is partnered with the American University of Sharjah (AUS) and Al Kamal American International School-Al Azra (AKAIS) and funded by the Atlantis Atlas Project until August 2025.

Contributing to Global Ocean Pollution Data

Goumbook’s project empowers students to use scientific methods to identify and analyze various types of plastics, from large debris to tiny microplastics. By engaging in this hands-on research, students not only develop practical environmental science skills but also contribute valuable data to global ocean conservation efforts.

  • Types of Plastics Studied: Macroplastics, mesoplastics, microplastics.
  • Student Involvement: High-school students trained in ocean literacy and plastic pollution.
  • Field Research: With guidance from university mentors, students collect plastic samples following the COLLECT methodology.
  • Advanced Techniques: Analysis of samples using FTIR (Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy) and density separation techniques.
  • Collaborative Data Sharing: Data shared with global organizations, influencing marine conservation policies worldwide.

Looking Ahead: Expanding Citizen Science Across the UAE

Goumbook plans to expand the Empowering Ocean Stewards project, broadening citizen science and ocean literacy initiatives to more schools across the UAE. As the project progresses, insights from this pilot will not only inform local efforts to address plastic pollution but also demonstrate the impact of involving youth in marine conservation.
